Since 1980 he has been working at University of Melbourne in the Faculty of Medicine as a research scientist, funded by grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). His major interests have been in developing statistical methods . Professor John Hopper, AM, was one of the nine inaugural Australia Fellows awarded by NHMRC in 2007 and is currently a NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow. Professor Hopper said that by having breast screening tailored to each woman’s risk, resources could be better allocated and produce more accurate results. He was also a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Senior Principal Research Fellow, and was one of the first nine Australia Fellows chosen by the NHMRC in 2007.
